Asian Journal
By Paris Dukes

A beautiful journal with a hint of the Far East makes the perfect gift for you or a friend! Paris collaged papers onto the front cover of this blank 6”x8” journal, then added simple paper embellishments plus mica, mah-jongg tiles and fibers. Here’s how she did it:

Supplies:

Instructions:

  1. Cover the journal. Remove the journal cover by gently separating the spiral binding and slipping the matboard cover off the wire spiral.
  2. Collage your paper. Tear three 3 1/2”-wide pieces of different rose-colored papers. Glue the lightest rose paper at the right hand side of the cover, aligning it with the edge. Glue the medium rose paper slightly overlapping the light pink. Glue the dark rose paper at the left hand side of the cover, covering the holes for the binding.
  3. Punch the holes. Flip the cover over and punch the holes for the binding, using the existing holes as a guide.
  4. Add your paper art. Cut or tear out the Asian-theme artwork and glue it onto the cover, overlapping the large circular floral motif and the Asian woman. For the circle on the right edge, cut 6” lengths of the fibers and knot in the middle. Insert the knot into the hole in the artwork. (Note: the fibers are not closures; they’re simply another decoration on the cover.) Attach the circle with foam tape, leaving an opening on the right side for the fibers.
  5. Add embellishments. Add a few Asian-themed 3-D embellishment to the cover for a special touch. Paris glued the entire piece of mica onto the lower right corner of the journal, with mah-jongg tiles glued on top. The word fragments “imagine” and “dream” are attached with foam tape.
  6. Add fibers. Reattach the cover to the journal, then tie 20” lengths of 6 different fibers to the spiral binding. Tie the tiny key to one of the fibers.
